Congratulations to Daniella Sakota who has been awarded this year’s Shelley-Mills prize for her essay ‘Listening to Wind-Song: Soundscapes, Nets, and the Music of The Tempest’. The Shelley-Mills Prize aims to promote the study of the works of William Shakespeare. The subject for 2023-24 was ‘Global Shakespeares’.
The judges said: “The judging panel was impressed by Daniella Sakota’s sensitive work on adaptations of The Tempest, and in particular her attention to the translation of its musicality into different prose forms. The essay was original, well-written, and clear in its aesthetic and political judgements. Congratulations, Daniella.”
Daniella commented: “I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Shelley-Mills prize for 2024! This year's topic is a wonderful way to encourage the study of Shakespeare's work outside of the Elizabethan English context within which they are traditionally framed and provides an opportunity to consider the variety of cultural responses to them. I am very grateful for the Faculty for the award and for the opportunity to engage with Shakespeare in this way!”
