Andrew J. Newell BA (Lpool), MSt, DPhil (Oxon) is the Junior Research Fellow in Literature & Theology at Wycliffe Hall and the English Faculty at the University of Oxford.

Andrew arrived in Oxford in 2016 as the first English student at Wycliffe Hall. He completed his MSt in 2017, and his DPhil in 2022. His doctoral thesis is the first comprehensive study of the hymns of the English poet and man of letters, William Cowper (1731-1800).

Following its launch in 2023, Andrew is the editor of The Buechner Review: an annual publication dedicated to the work of the American author, Frederick Buechner.

Andrew's research interests in the area of literature and theology are broad, and he has delivered lectures and papers at Wycliffe Hall and elsewhere on topics and authors as diverse as eighteenth-century poetry, hymnology, hagiography, museology, literary theory, John Bunyan, the Wesleys, William Cowper, Matthew Arnold, T. S. Eliot, Elizabeth Bowen, John le Carré, and Frederick Buechner.

Currently, Andrew is working on a number of research topics surrounding devotional poetics in the eighteenth century.
