Doctoral Research: My thesis examines the corpus of texts affiliated with the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon king, Alfred the Great, focusing especially on the legal, medical and historical writings of Alfred’s court and their intersection with the Old English translations of Latin literary works that made Alfred’s educational reforms famous. In the wake of recent scepticism towards Alfred’s involvement in the production of the Latin translations, I argue these other, collaboratively-authored writings bear important answers about the construction of Alfred’s royal voice and its deployment by his court on his behalf, as well as the political image Alfred was seeking to forward as king with the aid of his helpers.
