Professor Malachi McIntosh wins Edge Hill Prize for Best Debut collection

Congratulations to Professor Malachi McIntosh whose short story collection, Parables, Fables, Nightmares, won the Best Debut category at this year's Edge Hill Short Story Prize.

According to the Edge Hill website, "the competition celebrates emerging and established writers, highlighting the diverse voices and exceptional talents of contemporary short story writers from across the UK and Ireland".

Professor McIntosh commented: "It’s really wonderful to have a small collection, from an independent press, recognised in any way, much less by such an influential prize. I’m grateful, stunned, surprised and really thankful to everyone who helped bring the book into being."

The Edge Hill Prize, established in 2006, is the only prize for published, single-authored short story collections in the country. The Best Debut collection was a new prize category this year.

Previous winners of the Edge Hill Prize include Colm Tóibín, Claire Keegan, Chris Beckett, Jeremy Dyson, Graham Mort, Sarah Hall, John Burnside, Kirsty Gunn, Jessie Greengrass, Daisy Johnson, Tessa Hadley, David Szalay, Shelley Day, Kevin Barry, Saba Sams and last year’s winner Bernie McGill.
