Dr Penny Cartwright

I joined the English Faculty in 2021. I teach primarily on the MSt in World Literatures in English, where I run the Special Option, 'Literature and the Global Contemporary'. I am also a tutor at Queen's College, where I teach on nineteenth and twentieth century literature and on literary theory.

Prior to joining Oxford, I was a Teaching Associate at University of Bristol (2020-2021), where I completed my PhD. My research was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. I am currently writing my first monograph Scales and Subjects: Representations of the Global in Contemporary Anglophone African Literature. This builds on my doctoral research, examining the theorisation of 'global space' versus 'global orientation', in writers including Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Binyavanga Wainaina and Igoni Barrett.

My broader research interests include world and comparative literature theory, literatures of neoliberalism, narrative theory (especially ideas of 'worlding'), and Global South epistemologies.
