I lead a team of professionals responsible for the Bodleian Library’s publishing programme. We produce a wide range of newly commissioned trade titles each year aimed at a general audience. In addition, the imprint specializes in the History of the Book. We also produce the Bodleian Library Record, the scholarly journal of the Bodleian. The list is distributed globally (in the UK by Yale UP, in NA by University of Chicago Press) and most titles are widely reviewed in the mainstream media. The imprint is recognized as a leader in cultural publishing and helps to bring Oxford’s many riches to readers worldwide. Individually, books are distinguished by their quality, with an emphasis on editorial standards, materiality and production values.
I have lectured on cultural publishing and acted as advisor to cultural institutions in the interpretation and presentation of archival material to a general audience. I am interested in helping scholars to present their research to general audiences and have worked with scholarly colleagues in Oxford and across academia, helping them to turn their research into trade publications. I was a member of the Advisory Board for the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition).
I am actively engaged in my own field of scholarly research, spanning several areas in Medieval English literature, including visionary and devotional writing, autobiographical texts, and hagiography; authorial motivation, posthumous reputation, and literary identity. My current research project is a volume on Margery Kempe and autohagiography. I am also working on a new translation of The Revelations of the Monk of Eynsham with Henrietta Leyser.
