Thesis Title: Strange New Worlds: Reimagining the environment in the Íslendingasögur
Supervisor: Professor Siân Grønlie
Research Interests: Old Norse literature; Old English literature; ecocriticism; medievalism in contemporary culture
Doctoral Research:
The Íslendingasögur, or "Sagas of Icelanders" — pseudo-naturalistic narratives about Iceland's first generations of Norwegian settlers — were produced against a background of an unpredictable, marginal climate, frequent resource scarcity and violent geological activity. My DPhil project investigates how the sagas engage with this challenging environment. It is co-funded by the AHRC, the Clarendon Fund and Magdalen College.
