Thesis Title: Conceptualisations of time, the archive and containment in Arabic and English 'Refugee Literature'
Supervisors: Professor Matthew Reynolds & Professor Mohamed-Salah Omri
Research Interests: I am the Arabic language researcher on the Prismatic Translation strand of the OWRI-funded Creative Multilingualism project, Writer-in-Residence for the AHRC-ESRC funded Refugee Hosts research project, the ‘Creative Encounters’ editor for the Migration and Society journal, and Joint Lead of the Imagining Futures Baddawi Camp Lab funded by the AHRC-GCRF. My peer reviewed articles have been published in journals including Current History, GeoHumanities, Journal of Refugee Studies, Migration and Society, and Humanities. My poetry, translations and literary criticism have appeared in journals and magazines including Modern Poetry in Translation, Stand, Critical Quarterly, Cambridge Literary Review and PN Review. My collection, Writing the Camp (Broken Sleep Books 2021) was The Poetry Book Society’s Recommendation for Spring 2021, was selected as one of the “best poetry books of 2021” by the Daily Telegraph, and was Highly Commended by the 2021 Forward Prizes.
Doctoral Research: My DPhil research examines multiple conceptualisations of time, the archive and containment in Arabic and English literary texts which trace the journeys of refugees or would-be-refugees, within the context of the burgeoning field of ‘Refugee Writing.’ This includes a multilingual analysis of texts by Abdulrazak Gurnah, Salim Barakat, Ghassan Kanafani and Clare Bayley.
