Thesis title: Norse Perspectives on the Gaelic World
Supervisor: Dr Siân Grønlie
Research Interests: Old Norse-Icelandic literature, Old and Middle Irish literature, Norse-Gaelic contacts, the Scandinavian diaspora in the North Atlantic, cross-cultural contacts, alterity, identity construction, diaspora, ideologies of power.
Doctoral Research: My DPhil research explores cross-cultural contacts between the Norse and Gaelic spheres of influence and cultural milieux in the central and late Middle Ages. Taking into account not only the articulation of cultural memories pertaining to the Gaelic and Gaelicized Norse settlers of Iceland coming from the Britain and Ireland, but the role of post-Viking Age contacts, I examine the changing guises under which the Gaelic world, as well as the Scandinavian diaspora in the North Atlantic, appears in Icelandic texts.
About Me: I hold a BA in Classics and English from the University of Exeter and an MSt in English (650-1550) from the University of Oxford.
