My research combines a range of approaches to Shakespeare and early modern drama. Much of my recent work has been about the reception of Shakespeare in performance, print, and criticism, and about the scholarly and cultural investments in Shakespearean criticism (including my own). My work on Shakespeare's First Folio, for example, combined the history of the book with work on collecting, historical performance, the editorial tradition and Shakespeare's cultural and economic value over four centuries. I have published a number of essays on key Shakespearean themes - Shylock's Jewishness, the lost play 'Love's Labour's Won', the abdication of Richard II - that try to understand why and how we have come to think what we think about Shakespeare's plays.
I am also interested in drama in performance, in the methodology of writing about theatre, in reviewing and its rhetoric, and in productive analogies between cinema, film theory, and early modern performance. Pedagogy is important to me and I continue to work on readerly editions of early modern texts and on books, articles and lectures which disseminate research to the widest possible audience. My book This Is Shakespeare was a Sunday Times bestseller and has been translated into several other languages. I have written for a number of newspapers and journals in the US and the UK, and beyond: this article in The Guardian points to some of my current research interests. My book on book history, Portable Magic: A History of Books and their Readers, was shortlisted for the Wolfson Prize in 2023.
I have worked with theatre companies including at the Royal Shakespeare Company (where I am a Trustee), National Theatre and Donmar Warehouse. In 2023 I was the Sam Wanamaker Fellow at Shakespeare's Globe. I have contributed to radio programmes including Radio 3's Sunday Feature, Radio 4's In Our Time and The Long View, and developed programmes including Taking Issue with Shakespeare (broadcast in April 2023 on Radio 4). I have also served as a consultant for TV and film, including Josie Rourke's Mary Queen of Scots, and most recently, BBC television's three-part series 'Shakespeare: Rise of a Genius' (2023).
My current projects include a collaboration with Laurie Maguire on models of artistic collaboration in the early modern period and the modern academy. I am editing Thomas Nashe's Summers Last Will and Testament for the Oxford Nashe edition, and Twelfth Night is in press for Arden 4. I have collaborated with Fiona Stafford on a book called Shakespeare's Trees, to be published by Bodleian Publishing in 2026. My next book is on Elizabethan artistic culture from architecture to music to gardens to fashion: The First Elizabethans will be published by Penguin in 2026. The Oxford World's Classics Shakespeare, for which I am the General Editor, is about a quarter of the way through publishing the works with new introductions (my Macbeth came out in 2024): each title is the subject of one of our free monthly webinars, on the first Monday of the month at 6pm UK time.
In 2026 I am honoured to give the Shakespeare Birthday Lecture at the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Wells Lecture for Notre Dame, the Stevenson Lecture for the Bloomsbury Chapter, and the University of York's Patrides Lecture.
